On May 5 and 6, Local 6004 was proud to stand alongside Unifor members from across the province at Queen’s Park in support of Bill 55 — a legislation calling on Ontario to officially declare Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) an epidemic.

In Canada, one woman is killed by an intimate of former intimate partner every six days. Declaring IPV an epidemic is an essential first step to put life-saving measures in place.

Intimate Partner Violence continues to affect our workplaces, families, and communities every single day. Declaring IPV an epidemic is more than symbolic. It is a necessary step toward meaningful action, accountability, and lasting change.

As rates of IPV remain at crisis levels, Ontario must follow the lead of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and pass Bill 55.

Representing our Local was Sharon Frewen and Brooke Hooykaas, who alongside other Unifor members, met with 23 MPPs and leaders from across Ontario to advocate for stronger supports for survivors, increased funding for services, better education and prevention initiatives, and a coordinated province-wide response to IPV. In addition to meetings at Queen's Park, members also participated in a Red Dress Day Ceremony, in regognition of missing and murdered indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people.

We encourage everyone to help keep the pressure on decision-makers by sending a message to their MPP: unifor.org/IPV

A sincere thank you to Samia Hashi, Tracey Ramsey, Jensen Williams, and the entire organizing team for leading this important advocacy effort.
